Hello from Malibu! You haven't heard from me for a long time.
A lot of exciting things have been going on here on my farm.
I finally had some time to sit down last night to tell you about my work and what I have been up to.
– the fourth adventure behind the mirrors…
… is my priority right now. I’m working on the third draft, so I still have some way to go. But love being back behind the mirrors! I’m positive that we can get the book into readers’ hands by next fall.
2. Dragon Rider 4
The numbering of this adventure may be a little confusing to some, but we told the third one as an audio play in "The Volcano Adventure". Freddie, who had his first appearance in that story will be playing a big role in the fourth adventure (he’s already one of my favorite characters!)
The first draft is half done. I hope I get to continue writing it in November, when I put Reckless aside for a bit before tackling its fourth draft.
3. The Color of Revenge
The fourth Inkworld story is so important to me that I will be taking my time to finish it. It’s just about half done, and I hope to continue in January. But it certainly won’t be finished before 2021.
I also want everybody to know that my charity here in Malibu which supports young artists, and my work on environmental and immigrant issues is right now at least as important, if not even more important to me than my writing. I see it as my duty to work against all the darkness that’s rising in our world, be it nationalism, racism, or the ruthless plunder of our natural world. I love telling my stories, and I will continue to do so. But in these times, we all have to fight for what we believe in. Being a German, I am particularly aware of what might otherwise happen. So … please be patient with the books and all their sequels. If I’m not writing, I’m sitting here in Malibu, discussing with young artists what they’re working on, and I support the lawyers who work for immigrant children, or I help to release rescued sea lions back into the ocean … and … and …
And that brings me to another project I haven’t mentioned yet: I’m working on a children’s book about plants with Tammi Hartung, who has already written many wonderful books about herbs and how to grow and use them. I will do the illustrations, and I’ll be writing some of it, but most of the knowledge comes from Tammi and her Desert Canyon Farm in Colorado. The book will be in English and German, and we just finished the pages about dandelions!
Last but not least: this little library is for Kate, the small daughter of Elizabeth Dragga, one of my co-workers. But we’re planning to gift lots of these ‘suitcase libraries’ to schools . These libraries won’t contain my books, but rather some of the wonderful books about plants and animals I’ve found.
And what else do I get up to? Feeding the donkeys, the ducks, and the dogs.
Planting trees. Painting signs to all the places my visitors come from (or dream of!).
We put up three burnt trees as signposts, and they are filling up rather wonderfully!
