Andrew Nurnberg

Andrew Nurnberg

This is Andrew Nurnberg, Cornelia's fabulous literary agent and also one of her very best friends! (Sadly he never introduced her to the pelican). Andrew and Cornelia's cousin Oliver sell her books to other countries and send her thrilling messages like: 'Cornelia, your books will soon be published in Arabia!' or 'Cornelia, we just sold Inkheart to China!' Andrew is even more often on a plane than Cornelia is, and whenever she comes to London she has lots of dinners with him and his wonderful wife Harriett.

Anna's graduation

Anna's graduation

Cornelia and her daughter Anna celebrating Anna's graduation from University College London. Don't the hat and the robe look glorious?

At Salisbury Cathedral

At Salisbury Cathedral

This picture was taken in Salisbury while Cornelia was doing research for her book 'Ghost Knight'. She visited the famous cathedral together with her son Ben, who has shot up like a beanpole since then.

Beach

Beach

The beach where Cornelia often watches the sun set and the moon rise.

Chus

Chus

Maybe some of you have already stumbled across the little Spanish flag, that joins the German and British one. Yes, the world of Cornelia Funke is also available in Spanish, brought to life by María Xesús Bello Rivas, fondly called 'Chus'. One day Chus had the 'crazy idea' (direct quote Chus!) of translating Cornelia's website into Spanish so that the many, many Spanish fans could be taken care of as well. What a brilliant idea, Chus Said and done! Chus has translated the complete website into Spanish and takes care of Cornelia's Spanish speaking fans.

Clean-up time

Clean-up time

Cornelia very happy cleaning her pekin ducks' always dirty pond. Cornelia always has been and always will be a "country girl" She enjoys digging in the mud, feeding the animals, being among trees and flowers.

Cornelia and her children Anna + Ben

Cornelia and her children Anna + Ben

Cornelia read countless books to her children Anna and Ben. She always read in different voices, sometimes gruffy like a grumpy pirate, sometimes soft and gentle like a wise dragon, sometimes shrill and excited like an angry young princess.

Cornelia and her husband with their dog Rico

Cornelia and her husband with their dog Rico

Cornelia's very first dog was a white sheepdog-crossbreed. He was called Rico and had been in a shelter for months until Cornelia and her husband Rolf (who died in 2006) took him with them to their little house in Hamburg.

Cornelia in her pyjamas

Granted, this is quite a private photo: Cornelia in her pyjamas Next to her on the right sits her father Karl-Heinz (fondly called Charly by his family and friends). The man on the left is her uncle Wolfgang Schmitz, a graphic artist and professor of art.

Cornelia's assistant Angie

Cornelia's assistant Angie

May we introduce Angie to you - Cornelia's irreplaceable, wonderful assistant in Los Angeles. Angie is a LosAngelina, but her parents are from Cuba. You have to set your heart on her, because you always feel good when she is around. When Angie accompanies Cornelia to readings or other events, she is like a 'Piece Of Home To Go'.

Cornelia's dog Luna

Cornelia's dog Luna

Cornelia's very hairy and over-sweet dog Luna, also known as Looney or Looney Beverly or Babyganoosh. Looney died in 2015 at the age of 14. She was a crossbreed of Bearded Collie and Golden Retriever. She demanded eighteen hours of sleep a day, three and a half hours of TLC, about two hours of walk (preferably in the Franklin Canyon) - and the rest of the time she spent on eating. She constantly stole stuffed animals and carried them off to the garden.

Cornelia's son Ben in San Diego

Cornelia's son Ben in San Diego

Cornelia's son Ben at Seaworld, San Diego. He has not given away what they 'discussed', but... it appears they are quite taken with each other A white whale... Cornelia hopes your children will be able to see them in the wild. We are planning to introduce animal protection projects on this website soon. This picture should be a reminder of how important it is to protect them!

Duck eggs

Duck eggs

The very first eggs from Cornelia's pekin ducks. By now there are six ducks living with Cornelia on the old avocado farm. As ducklings, Snowy, Sleepy, Buster, and Howard were thrown away. Cornelia's son Ben adopted them from an animal shelter. A few months ago, there were two additions to the little duck community: Merry and Pippin are new members of the growing Farm Family.

Elephant shower

Elephant shower

Elephant whisperer Anna (Cornelia's daughter) taking an elephantastic shower. In India she has met many new trunked friends and has visited all those temples which she would like to work at as a restorer one day. Elephants have been Anna's favourite animals since she 'met' Babar ... or maybe this love originated from a previous life...

Elinor Bagenal

Elinor Bagenal

Elinor Bagenal, picture book editor at Chicken House, Cornelia's British publisher, and one of her dearest friends in this world and all the others. They love to do tours through the English countryside together to look at castles and gardens and have cream tea together.

Kerstin Meyer

Kerstin Meyer

Kerstin Meyer is a German illustrator, who has illustrated many of Cornelia's books. The humour of her drawn characters always hits the right note for Cornelia's stories. In her studio in Hamburg Altona she brought to life characters like Princess Pigsty, The Princess Knight and Captain Firebeard.

Martina Nommel

Martina Nommel

Here we have Cornelia's wonderful literary agent for Spain and for all Spanish-speaking countries, Martina Nommel. She has already sold so many of Cornelia's books to Spain, that you have almost as many titles there as in Germany. In Cornelia's Barn you find a picture of Martina's son Miguel which shows him disguised as the Thief Lord (and looks sooooo authentic!).

Matthew Cullen

Matthew Cullen

Mathew Cullen is a famous director of music videos and commercials. Matt won two Grammies for his Wheezer and his Black Eyed Peas videos. He filmed Adele's Chasing Pavements, Sara Bareille's Gravity, R.E.M.'s Animal and many many more. He is one of the founders of both Motion Theory and Mirada. Matt was my director for MirrorWorld, but he is so much more than a director. He is a brilliant storyteller and in 2015, he and Cornelia founded the Breathing Books publishing company.

Rainer Strecker

Rainer Strecker

The man behind the microphone is Rainer Strecker, Cornelia's German tongue, who reads almost all her audio-books in Germany. Rainer and Cornelia did many readings together. He does the male and Cornelia does the female voices. Cornelia finds it much more exciting to do it this way than just reading alone - and much more entertaining for the listener as well. Rainer is a well known German actor in theatre, TV and film. (© Michael Orth)
